SENECA LAKE · SEASONAL FARMS

The Finger Lakes U-Pick trail.

Blueberries in July, apples in October, Christmas trees in December. Organized by season, not by geography — because the calendar is what actually decides which fields are open.

The Finger Lakes u-pick season runs longer than most guests realize. Strawberries in June, blueberries in July, peaches and peppers in August, grapes and apples in September and October, cut Christmas trees in November and December — with cut flowers, honey, mushrooms, and pasture-raised protein available most of the year. What follows is the seasonal map of where to go and when.

The u-pick farms on this trail are, without exception, real family operations. Fields open when the crop is ready, close when it's picked. Same-day announcements on Facebook are the norm; called-ahead confirmation is polite. Bring cash for small purchases, closed-toe shoes for the fields, and patience for the weather — nothing about a working farm runs on the visitor's schedule.

JUNE-JULY

Strawberries, blueberries, and cut flowers.

The early-summer window. Blueberries hit peak mid-July; cut flowers run all season. Bring bug spray, wear closed-toe shoes, and expect the farm to close early on humid afternoons.

Wolftree Farm

Organic blueberries · PYO

Hector

Pick-your-own organic blueberries. A summer tradition worth the trip — the fields open when the berries are ready, close when they're picked. Follow their signage; it's often a same-day announcement.

Lilly Family Farm

Blueberries · Grapes

Hector

Blueberries and grapes in season. Smaller operation than Wolftree, quieter fields on peak Saturdays. Call ahead to confirm the fields are open.

Jenny Creek Flowers

Flowers · PYO

Hector

Cut-your-own flowers all summer. CSA shares available; seasonal workshops on flower design if you want to spend an afternoon. The rare u-pick that isn't food.

AUGUST-SEPTEMBER

Peppers, produce, and the specialty pick.

Peak growing season. Everything on the trail is at its best. Hector Hot Peppers alone is worth the drive if you like heat; Mansfield's kiwiberries are a specialty item you'll not find in a grocery.

Hector Hot Peppers

70+ varieties

Hector

Seventy-plus varieties of sweet and hot peppers from a specialist grower. Not technically u-pick — but the farmstand is what a serious pepper-store looks like. Sample first; buy carefully.

Mansfield Farm

Kiwiberries

Hector

Grapes and kiwiberries — the rare east-shore specialty farm worth the visit for the kiwiberries alone. Small window; call before driving.

Hector

Respected Hector produce operation. Farmstand pickup — not strictly u-pick, but the freshest produce on the trail during peak season.

SEPTEMBER-OCTOBER

Apples, grapes, and the harvest.

The postcard month. Harvest is on, the wine trail is peak, and the u-pick farms extend into orchards and vineyards. Coordinate with a wine-trail day and make it a full weekend.

Meadowlark Farm

Organic · Full farm

Hector

Certified-organic vegetables, cut flowers, eggs, and pasture-raised lamb. The full harvest anchor — plan an hour minimum. Farm visits by their calendar.

Stowaway Farms

Meat · Eggs

Hector

Pasture-raised beef, pork, and eggs. Open most days with a staffed farmstand. Not u-pick — but the harvest-season protein stop for the cottage kitchen.

Windsong Farm

By appointment

Burdett

Lamb, beef, produce, jam, and flowers. Farm visits by appointment only — call ahead, respect the schedule.

NOVEMBER-DECEMBER

Cut-your-own Christmas trees.

The season most guests don't associate with the Finger Lakes — the tree farms are the winter u-pick, and three sit within twenty minutes of the lake. Saws provided; dress warm; bring cash for the tag.

Hector

Christmas trees, cut-your-own in season. The classic winter-weekend outing — arrive after Thanksgiving, expect the fields to thin by mid-December.

Anderson Tree Farm

Cut-your-own

Hector

Christmas trees, cut-your-own in season. The alternative when Van Der Zee is busy on a peak Saturday.

Hunt's Tree Farm

Hector

Christmas trees in season. Smaller operation, quieter fields. The insider's pick on the Christmas circuit.

OPEN MOST OF THE YEAR

Farmstands worth the drive.

Not seasonal-window u-pick — the staffed farmstands and specialty producers open most of the year. Add one of these to any u-pick day to round out the haul.

Burdett

Small grocery in the village of Burdett with local produce, meat, and pantry staples. The right stop to build the arrival-day cottage-stocking run around.

Hector

Organic vegetables from a long-running Hector operation. Friday farmstand in season — plan around the day.

Bear Farm

Self-serve · Daily

Hector

Local honey from a small apiary — open daily, self-serve. Cash in the box, jar off the shelf.

Hawk Meadow Farm

Tours Jun-Oct

Hector

Medicinal mushroom extracts, herbal remedies, fresh shiitake in season. Farm tours June through October — the deep-cut for anyone curious about the region's mushroom trade.

The Practical

How to do the u-pick day.

  • CALL BEFORE DRIVING

Fields open and close on a same-day schedule. The Facebook posts and the answering-machine message are the source of truth; the website is often out of date.

  • MORNINGS ARE COOLER

Blueberry and pepper fields get hot by noon. Aim for the 9-11 AM window; the produce is also crisper before the sun hits it.

  • BRING CASH

Several farms are self-serve with a jar-on-a-shelf setup. Others take Venmo. Chip cards are the least reliable option in the region.

  • PICK LIGHT

Every u-pick day ends with more produce than the cottage can eat. Split with the group; freeze what you can; give the rest to the next day's arrival.

  • CHRISTMAS TREES · BRING A SAW

Most tree farms provide saws, but the busy Saturdays run out. If you have your own handsaw, bring it — the field-side wait can be an hour otherwise.

MAKE IT A WEEKEND

The trail changes every month.

The u-pick season runs May through December. Book the property, pick the month, we'll tell you what's in the fields that week.
