FESTIVAL · WATKINS GLEN
Mid-August (Friday before NASCAR) · Village of Watkins Glen
The Event
On the Friday before NASCAR Cup weekend, the village of Watkins Glen closes Franklin Street and recreates the original 6.6-mile Grand Prix road course that ran through town from 1948 to 1952. Vintage race cars parade the route, stop at the old start-finish line, and draw a crowd that ranges from serious motorsport historians to families on sidewalks with ice cream.
It's the most charming motorsport street festival in America — a warm-up for the NASCAR weekend and arguably the reason to come to Watkins Glen in August even if you don't have a race ticket.
What to Expect
Vintage race cars parading the original 1948–1952 street course
Franklin Street closed, filled with cars, food, and crowds
Ceremonial laps and short exhibition runs at the old start line
Free to attend — no grandstand ticket required

Why This One Matters
“The free, feet-on-the-pavement motorsport Friday before NASCAR — a village-scale festival that predates the modern track.”
